Walking in their footsteps – 1916 comes alive!

Transition year history students got the chance to relive the 1916 rising by walking in the footsteps of the rebels on Tuesday 23rd of February 2016.1916 tour
Students got to walk the trail of the leaders to many of the strongholds defended by the rebels in 1916. Beginning at Liberty Hall and learning about the organisation of the rising pupils walked to the GPO, Moore Street, Four Courts, Dublin Castle, City Hall, Trinity College and finished at Stephen’s Green. 1916 tour 2The walk was led by Ms. Murphy who enthralled the pupils with her knowledge of the rising stopping at each building and often stopping along the streets where the battle had raged 100 years ago showing the pupils the still visible battle scars of the Easter Rising. The tour finished at Collins Barracks with pupils given the opportunity to explore the barracks and in particular the role of Irish soldiers in history tying in nicely with 1916 centenaty celebrations. Special thanks to the pupils who were excellent and attentive and to Ms Murphy for providing the tour.

Grandparents’ Mass.

IMG_1338A wonderful celebration of the importance of Grandparents in our students’ lives took place on Monday in St Anne’s Church and afterwards in the Parish Centre.

IMG_1356Daniel from 2S played guitar in the background, and he did really well. The girls from 4S were invaluable with their tea- making skills and hospitality and all of the 1st years made a huge effort to mingle!
One Grandad and Granny drove up from Tullamore for the event! Well done to Ms Murphy and Ms Clarke and all of the students who organised the event. More photos can be viewed in the Flickr feed.grandparents mass

Lesotho 2016

The school community and wider community wish the students, teachers, community members and parents every success in their forthcoming journey to The Kingdom of Lesotho. A group of 96 volunteers will depart Dublin Airport Terminal 1 at 10 am Friday February 5th. The group will continue project work in Education, Health and local Government.
Two highlights this year will be a Photographic Exhibition in Lesotho’s cultural centre on Saturday Feb 13th at Thaba Bosiu. This event will be opened by His Majesty King Letsie III follow by  music and dance. The exhibition looks back on our respective journeys to independence and from that past we look to the future and explore human rights so that our young men and women can proclaim a future of hope and certainty. The exhibition concludes with a joint 2016 Proclamation from the students of Hlalele HS and Portmarnock CS.Lesotho 2016
The second highlight will be in our Humanitarian Mapping Project. This year Lesotho will conduct a national census and the recent mapping of Lesotho by our students is proving to be useful tool for the forthcoming census. This will be supported by Fingal CC, The Lesotho Planning Institute and The Irish Planning Institute.
