On Wednesday 15th February 3 students competed in the Leinster Schools’ Cross-Country Championships in Santry Demesne. Maximilian Kelly 1F ran first in the Minor Boys’ 2000m race, he had an amazing race and was leading in parts of the heavily waterlogged course. It was a tough race and he finished an impressive 7th place, that strong finish qualifies him to compete in the All-Irelands. Two students competed in the Inter Boys’ race – Aaron Cullen 3F and Craig Giles 4G. Both athletes were recovering from injury and illnesses so the nerves were palpable.
Both boys had a great start and kept up with the leading group through the tough 4500m race. Craig was the first to finish in 6th place and followed quickly by Aaron in 14th place. These great performances by both have qualified them for the All-Ireland which takes place in Newtownabbey in County Antrim on Saturday the 11th of March. The athletics club and school wish the three boys the best of luck at such a prestigious competition.
Training for Santry Track and Field Competitions will begin after mid-term on Friday mornings and Wednesday after school. A schedule of training for both track and field events will be put up on the ‘B Compound’ noticeboard after mid-term. New members of all abilities are welcome! Any questions see Ms. Malone.
