Academic Awards 2015.

On Wednesday 14 October 2015 we hosted our Annual Academic Awards attended by proud parents/guardians and teachers and beaming students. Mr Higgins excelled once more with his coveted certificates and Southern cross painting. Ms O’Driscoll’s impressive string quintet played ‘Trumpet Voluntary’ by Jerimiah Clarke and an extract from ‘Canon’ by Pachelbel creating a wonderful atmosphere.

Mr Fitzgerald introduced Mr David Hickey as our guest speaker. He is a former footballer and current selector for Dublin and the current Director of Transplantation. He was awarded two all-stars for Dublin in 1974 and 1976. He won the All Ireland with Dublin on three occasions in 1974, 1976 and again in 1977. David has won two League Medals with Dublin in 1976 and 1978. He is a consultant urologist and transplant surgeon.

Mr Hickey spoke of how we must be true to ourselves and not accept the status quo if we are to make a mark on our world. We must blend compassion with ambition and help the vast majority of the population who are not as privileged as us. His simple and truthful message will echo in the future actions of all who were present.

Camogie Report by Aoibhe Dillon.

Losing the toss Portmarnock had to play with the wind and down the hill against a decent Loreto Beaufort side. With some fine points from Ciara Holland, Claire McGowan, Lauren Delaney and Aoibhe Dillon, PCS went into a 1-2 to 0-7 lead at half time. A strong wind and a hill meant the second half was always going to be be tough. Points from Ciara Holland and Aoibhe Dillon were answered with a goal by Beaufort but Portmarnock got the lead back with a great goal from Ciara Egan. Megan O’Connor was brilliant in the defence and the full back line with Emma Ford in goals denied Loreto many goal chances. With about 10 minutes to go Loreto attacked with pace and got lucky to get a couple goals to take the lead. The game ending 4-8 to 1-10 to Beaufort. This was Portmarnock’s first game in the A division for a few years so they weren’t expected to win but to be as close as they were was brilliant. They now face Colaiste Iosagán next week where they’ll be hoping for a similar performance.

As part of their Media Literacy work, students had completed research on all aspects of the film – finding out about the directors, the animators, the voice-actors, the music and reading reviews of the film. As students of animation the group were able to appreciate the technical skills used to create the film and hope to apply some of the techniques to their own animations.
