Our Ethos & Educational Philosophy
A School for Every Student
Portmarnock Community School is a co-educational, comprehensive school serving students from Portmarnock and the surrounding communities.
Since opening in 1979, our aim has been to provide an education where every student is valued, supported and encouraged to reach their potential. We believe that education is about much more than academic achievement. It is about developing the whole person – intellectually, socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
We want our students to leave PCS with confidence in who they are, an understanding of others and a sense of their place in the wider community.
Inclusive by Nature
As a Community School, inclusivity and equality are central to who we are.
We welcome students from all backgrounds, cultures, beliefs and circumstances. Our school community is built on the belief that everyone has something to contribute and everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.
We strive to create an environment where students feel safe, respected, listened to and encouraged to take appropriate responsibility for themselves and others.
Our Shared Values
PCS brings together the traditions and values of our three Joint Patrons: Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board (DDLETB), the Loreto Sisters and the Archbishop of Dublin.
While each brings its own history and perspective, there is a strong shared commitment to the values that underpin life at PCS:
Respect • Equality • Justice • Care • Courage • Sincerity • Freedom • Joy • Excellence
These values shape the way we teach, learn and work together.
A Holistic Education
We believe that every student is more than a set of grades.
Our approach to education recognises and celebrates the different strengths, interests and talents that students bring to school. Alongside academic learning, we provide opportunities to develop through sport, music, the arts, leadership, student voice, community involvement and a wide range of extracurricular activities.
We encourage our students to be curious, to think critically, to try new things, to learn from mistakes and to develop the confidence to make a positive contribution to the world around them.
Our Loreto Heritage
Our Loreto connection is an important part of the story of PCS.
The educational vision of Mary Ward, founder of the Loreto tradition, continues to inspire our commitment to education that promotes personal growth, equality, justice and compassion. Her belief in the potential and leadership of young women remains particularly relevant to our school community.
Our Loreto heritage encourages us to stand alongside those who may experience disadvantage or exclusion and to ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate fully in school life.
Our Community School Identity
Being a Community School is central to who we are.
Our students, parents, staff, past pupils and wider community all contribute to the life of PCS. We believe that strong relationships are at the heart of a successful school and that education works best when we work together.
Ultimately, our goal is simple – to create a school where every young person feels that they belong, is encouraged to discover their strengths, and is supported to become the very best version of themselves.
