A Young School with a Proud History

Portmarnock Community School was established in 1979, created to meet the growing need for second-level education in the town of Portmarnock. We were one of the first Community Schools established in Ireland.

From the beginning, PCS was something a little different. The Community School model brought together the academic traditions of the voluntary secondary school with the practical and vocational strengths of the vocational school. It was an innovative approach to education, designed around the needs of the local community.

Our school was established through a partnership between the Archbishop of Dublin, County Dublin VEC and the Loreto Sisters, who became our Joint Patrons. Alongside parents and staff, they formed the Board of Management that continues to play an important role in the life of the school.

Our Loreto Connection

Our Loreto heritage remains an important part of who we are.

Over the years, many Loreto Sisters have contributed to the life and development of PCS, both through our Board of Management and in a variety of practical and pastoral roles. We are particularly proud of the opportunities our school provides for young women to flourish – academically, personally and through the many activities and opportunities beyond the classroom.

A Tradition of Achievement

Although PCS is a relatively young school, our students have always made their mark.

We are proud of our academic achievements and of the many successes of our students across sport, music, drama, debating and the arts. Our past pupils have gone on to make their contribution across a wide range of professions, including medicine, law, business, the arts, stage and screen.

But the story of PCS is about much more than trophies and achievements. It is about people, friendships, opportunities and memories – and the many generations of students, families and staff who have helped shape our school.

Looking to the Future

More than 45 years after first opening our doors, PCS continues to grow and evolve. As development of our new school building gets underway, we look forward to an exciting new chapter in the school’s story.

Our yearbooks, photographs, displays and trophy cabinets reflect the journey that has brought us to where we are today. But, more than anything, it is the students who walk through our doors each day who shape our story and create our future.

We may still be a young school by Irish educational standards, but we have a proud history, a strong sense of community and an exciting future ahead.
