Writing Week starts its story on Monday 17 November. Students and staff will be participating in various activities designed to promote the importance of writing skills as part of our Literacy Programme. Events include a Limerick writing competition; workshops with poet Colm Keegan; a visit from buskers on behalf of the Donal Walsh Foundation encouraging lyric writing and a Drop and Write session.
Donal Walsh, the Kerry teenager who touched so many lives when he came to prominence through his writings and subsequent appearance on Brendan O’Connor’s ‘The Saturday Night Show’ is being honoured by his native county. Donal, who fundraised tirelessly while battling Cancer has now had the Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation set up by his family in order to bring forward his causes of providing age appropriate teenage facilities in hospital and hospice centres as well as promoting his anti-suicide message. The #Livelife message. The Enterprise Society of DCU are doing their best to carry on this message and raise vital funds through their fundraising events.
Past pupil of P.C.S and DCU student Ciaran O’Reilly and fellow student Padraig Boyle, are organising a fundraising event in the school on Wednesday the 19th of November in conjunction with Writing Week. Students will be visiting classrooms and performing music in a busker style fashion and performing in the Assembly Hall at break time to raise money for the Foundation. Your generosity for this very worthy cause will be greatly appreciated.
This is Science Week in PCS and the Science Teachers have organised various activities including displays and quizzes. Thanks to Ms Maguire, Ms Richardson, Ms O’Kane and the TY students for this most impressive Periodic Table of Cupcakes!

Brian Mooney delivered an excellent talk last night which was much appreciated by a large turnout of fifth and sixth year students and their families who are steering a course through the veritable maze of forms and deadlines that is the CAO.

The three members of The Original Rude Boys performed a wonderful acoustic set in front of our Transition Year students today. It was a reward for the great charity work organised by Mr. O’Mahony last year to raise money for and awareness of Mental Health Issues through the ‘Walk in my Shoes’ initiative. Kate Moran, a past pupil of PCS, talked to the students about mental health issues and the work of Console before the band played and discussed their personal motivation for becoming Mental Health ambassadors. A wonderful celebration of academic excellence in the state exams took place last night. Mr Higgins whose glorious artwork formed an historical backdrop to a great night transformed the Assembly Hall into an impressive arena of awards. Parents witnessed students being presented with the fabulous awards depicted above which were also designed and created by Mr. Higgins. Our returning Leaving Certificate and last years Junior Certificate students who excelled in their exams through dedication and long hours of study will treasure them for a very long time.
Our Principal, Ms Deeney, welcomed our special guest speaker Mr Shaun Quinn, Chief Executive of Fáilte Ireland. Mr Quinn exhorted the students to retain their work ethic, as it is this that will set them apart from others with similar skills. He emphasised a focus on goals as important but also saw interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence as attributes that will enhance opportunities.
Mr Quinn then presented our most successful Junior Certificate students with their certificates. Ms Norris read out the list of names concluding with Rachel Donnelly-Lawlor who won the Overall Award. Mr Clarke then called the Leaving Certificate students forward, concluding with our Overall Award winner Mark Nolan. Mark is studying Medicine in TCD and continues to be a remarkable individual who is not only highly focused on his studies but also on his community.
We were delighted that Ms Geraldine Kenny returned to PCS to present our annual Mathematics Award to Kate Hawkshaw. Ms Kenny spoke passionately of the centrality of Maths in so many aspects of modern life. She expressed delight at so many female students pursuing Science and Maths related courses.
Our Head Boy and Head Girl, Ultain O’Moráin and Ailbhe Twomey presented our Students of the Year with their trophies and medals. Students from each year are marked out as contributing in a significant way to school spirit. The winners were: Holly Ramsey (1st Year); Ashlee Rocliffe (2nd Year); Oisín Reilly (3rd Year); Faolan Radcliffe-McGovern (4th Year) and Kate Finnucane (5th Year).
The Principal’s Award is given to a student that has excelled academically but also contributed widely to our school community. Mark Nolan was the deserving recipient.
All in all a marvellous night marking the rewards that come with dedication and hard work was enjoyed by parents, students and teachers alike.
