First Year Parents/Guardians Information Evening.


All First Year Parents and Guardians are invited to attend an Information Evening at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 30 September. There will be a presentation on study techniques and our prefects will be explaining their role in ensuring your son/daughter settles in to our community. You will also see the cyberbullying presentation being given at assembly this week. There will be refreshments afterwards.

Friendship Week.


This week is Friendship Week in Portmarnock Community School when we celebrate kindness and equip students to deal with unkindness. There are presentations, classes on cyberbullying, quizzes and music with a grand finale on Friday when students from all years perform for their friends on stage. Parents’ Association AGM.

Our Parents’ Association AGM is on Thursday 2nd October at 7.30pm. It is a great way to get involved in a meaningful way in your son/daughter’ school. All parents/guardians welcome. We are also looking for new members this year and would ask any parent /guardian who can spare one evening a month ( max one and a half hours ) to join the committee.  Tea /coffee will be served afterwards.


President of DCU addresses PCS teachers.

Professor Brian MacCraith, President of DCU talked to PCS teachers about the latest developments in education today. He was presented with a limited print by our Principal Eithne Deeney. Thanks to Valerie Cullen-Herbert and Nicolina Fitzpatrick, parents’ representatives on the Board of Management for arranging this very informative presentation.DCU

Adult Education

The Adult Education Programme for the Autumn Term begins Tues 23rd. September. The following classes are running:

  • Art / Painting,
  • Learn to Bake (full),
  • Mindfulness,
  • First Aid,
  • Zumba,
  • iPad, Tablet and Smartphone training
  • Spanish (starts Tues 7th Oct.)
  • Yoga (starts 7:15pm)
  • Pilates (starts 7pm)
  • Golf
  • Creative Writing (Starts 30th Sept.)
  • Ballroom Dancing (Saturday 11am)

If you wish to join a class you can just turn up tomorrow night. Further info available in the Adult Education Section.

Big Beach Clean.

The Big Beach Clean is taking place this weekend all over Ireland and our students’ research and dedication to keeping The Velvet Strand clean forms part of this national campaign. The Sean Lemass Award for Excellence in Enterprise

Sean Lemass AwardCongratulations to Joseph Dunne, Ryan Kelly, Stephen McInerney Foran and Ultan Ó’ Moráin who today received the Sean Lemass Award for Excellence in Enterprise from an Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, T.D. and Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’ Sullivan, T.D.

The boys were accompanied to the Department of Education and Skills by Ms. Eithne Deeney, Principal and Mr. Donal O’ Mahony, former Transition-year coordinator, now with Junior Cycle for Teachers. Their company is called Surfwatch.

The Sean Lemass award, unveiled in 2009, on the 50th anniversary of his appointment to office, aims to boost business skills and interest among young people. Mr. Lemass was instrumental in founding Aer Lingus, Bord na Móna and other state bodies.

SurfWatch is software that uses a proprietary algorithm to estimate real time wave height from video imagery. The mathematics underlying the software was developed by Ultan Ó’ Móráin. Joseph Dunne, Ryan Kelly and Stephen McInerny Foran worked with Ultan and founded SurfWatch in order to market the software.
