YOGA FOR BEGINNERS

Portmarnock Community School Adult Education Programme:

Yoga for Beginners

This is a hatha yoga practice and is considered a gentle style of yoga and is great for beginners and it
is suitable for all age groups. Yoga is all encompassing in that there are several aspects to it and all
with unique benefits.
At the beginning of each yoga practice we start with a meditation and we focus on the breath and
the benefits of meditating.
Following the meditation we get going with the yoga poses and I will guide you through each one
focusing on the correct alignment and highlighting the benefits of each yoga pose. We will also work
with the breath and I will introduce you to the different types of breathing.
At the end of our practice we have a relaxation pose known as Savasana. (Meaning resting pose)

Benefits of the Yoga Poses

Yoga stretches and strengthens all the major and minor muscles in the body.
Yoga strengthens the abdominal muscles and will strengthen the lower, mid and upper back.
It improves greater flexibility through the spine and increases a wider range of movement.
Yoga improves balance and coordination.
Yoga breathing comes with enormous benefits and just knowing how to tap into our breath can help
to slow things down.

Benefits of Meditation

Yoga and Meditation combined can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit
both your emotional well-being and your overall health. You can also use it to relax and cope with
stress by refocusing your attention on something calming and I will guide you in how you can
achieve this.

Benefits of Savasana

Calms the central nervous system
Calms the mind and reduces stress
Relaxes the body fully all the way from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet and allows you to become totally relaxed.
